What do you need to know, before you hire?
A1: Speak with members of the department that you’re hiring for. What are some of the areas where they need help or where they see gaps that need to be filled? What kind of support do they need? If possible, can you involve them in the hiring process? #StartupChats

A1: As a leader you need to be planning 3-5 years in the future. You need to have a full understanding of your product roadmap & growth plans so you know where & when talent is needed. #startupchats

It is so important to know the goals and needs of your business. As a leader in your business, you likely know what is missing, but your team can also support in identifying gaps. Building diverse perspectives across your teams is a big gap we are still seeing #StartupChats

How do you communicate your values?
A2.1/2 Well, first you need to KNOW your values. If you do, rather than telling yours, ask theirs. What’s important to them? What will they stand up for? or stand against? A values discussion is always worth having. @Scotiabank #StartupChats

A2: You start communicating to candidates’ way before they’re a candidate. It’s through how your organization tells its story, builds its brand and displays its culture to the world. #StartupChats

How can we truly learn about potential candidates?
Being prepared with targeted questions, experiential examples, and often bringing candidates through a real life example have been helpful!
I’ve found our practical interview elements to be the most helpful here #StartupChats

A4: You can definitely set up candidates to perform as well as possible if you have a well thought out job description that attracts the right candidates, and then ask value-based questions. #StartupChats

Reality is you can’t. You rely on your judgment and the feedback of others around them until you have enough opportunity to assess their competence and behavior. Your background matters very little if it doesn’t reflect you here and now.
